Chandigarh: Beijing Olympics bronze medalist boxer Vijender Singh on Sunday joined a long list of national award winners who threatened to return the awards if they did not meet the demands of the agitating farmers.
The 35-year-old Vijender, who voiced his support for the protesters on the Sonipat Singh border, successfully contested the 2019 elections on the Congress ticket and said his long association with the Punjab state had brought him to the protest site. .
“I support the demands of the farmers, and the whole country must support them because they are the lifeline of the country. Without them, we cannot live a day, ”he said.
“I am here today as our elder brother Punjab is here (Sonipat), so how can the people of Haryana stay behind? I am pretty owl to Punjab. I spent most of my boxing career at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala. Therefore, it is my time to return to the state, ”Vijender said.
Vijender, who threatened to return the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sports honor, in 2009, appealed to fellow athletes across the country to join the ‘revolution’ and warn the government that the protests would be extended. Unless the nationwide ‘laws are taken back.
“If the government does not revoke the black laws, I will return my Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. The unity of the peasantry has always been there and will remain in the future,” he said.
“I got the award for making the country proud on the international stage, but it is not acceptable for the government to deal with the farmers. So, in protest, I will return the award and all other benefits,” he said.
Two days after former Indian coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu threatened to return his Dronacharya title, Vijender has backed the interests of the peasantry. Boxing legends Kaur Singh and Jaipal Singh also joined the call.
Thirty more athletes in Punjab, including Padma Shri and Arjuna Award-winning wrestler Kartar Singh, Arjuna Award-winning basketball player Sajjan Singh Cheema and Arjuna Award-winning hockey player Rajbir Kaur, have made similar threats.
