Laxman said Rohit’s caliber batsman should be a regular in the Indian Test team and his career reminds him of his own.
“There is no doubt that he is an amazing leader. Whenever he leads in the absence of Virat, he is successful,” Laxman said in a virtual launch of ‘The Hitman: The Rohit Sharma Story’ written by Vijay Lokpalli and G Krishnan.
“Leading a franchise for five awards is not easy. He is a team that (Mumbai Indians) has built and managed to handle tough situations. India has all the qualities to be a successful captain. . ”
Laxman said Rohit had a “stop-start career” in Test cricket. “His career reminded me of my career. He asked me to change the batting order. It is not easy to open against fast bowlers without opening up.
“But he is suffering from injuries. He’s talented enough to be a Test player. I first saw him at the KSCA Tournament in 2005. He had a lot of time against fast bowlers, but he fought against spinners. A year later I saw him improve and he was 6th. He knew that he had the ability to do something very special: Test cricket and he has done it three times in ODI cricket.
Former India captain Anil Kumble, who was part of the book launch, said Rohit would be ready to take office when the time comes.
“[He was] Mumbai Indians are very confident when we offer them a leadership offer. That, of course, came to him. They are ready for the challenge. Well we are discussing having a second person option. We are lucky that Rohit has succeeded [in the IPL]. I am sure they will be ready when the time comes and need it, ”said Kumble, who is part of the Mumbai Indians coaching staff.
