Sophia Kenin of the United States, who won her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, has been named WTA Player of the Year.
Kenyon defeated world No. 1 Ashley Barty and two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza in the semifinals in the final at Maniborne Park. Kenin reached the French Open final and was tied for the season No. 1 career high

The eighth American to win the WTA Player of the Year award is Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Tracy Austin, Chris Evert, Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati.
Iga Svetek, named the WTA’s Most Improved Player of the Year, was the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title when she defeated Kenin in the French Open final.
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka was named WTA comeback player of the year after earning her first title in four years at the Western & Southern Open and advancing to her fifth career Grand Slam final at the US Open. The Belarusian has regained its place in the WTA Top 20.
After winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros titles, France’s Christina Mladenovic and Hungary’s Tima Babos were selected as the WTA duo of the year.
