Haridwar: A 50-year-old Dalit RTI activist, Pankaj Lamba, who owns the lid of a SC / ST scholarship scandal in Uttarakhand, has died after a freak accident in which a 16-year-old girl was accidentally shot. MS Nawaz reports that he was shot by the activist’s own pistol.
The bullet hit his neck. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The incident took place on Friday night at Tehri Vistapit Colony. According to police, Lamba was allegedly at a party at the girl’s home where she gave her pistol to the teenager.
Feeling that the Lamba pistol was empty, he gave it to the girl, police say
Activist Pankaj Lamba said he thought the pistol was empty but the pistol for the bullet was in the room, police said. Five were in attendance, including the girl’s sister and two of Lamba’s companions during the incident.
SHO Ranipura police station Yogesh Dev told TOI, “Clearly, the girl, her sister and two younger brothers were not happy with their father’s second marriage. His father was a resident of Delhi and had left the children at Haridwar, where he would frequently visit them. The girl, meanwhile, came in contact with a man named Lana, a close friend of Lamba’s. Manav invited Lamba to the party at the girl’s residence on Friday. “At the time of the incident Lamba had two guns and he gave the girl a pistol to look at,” Dev said. Haridwar SSP Senthil Awadhai Krishna Raj told TOI, “Alcohol bottles and food have been seized from the site. We recorded the statement of the girls and two other persons who were on the spot. The investigation is ongoing. ”
Lamba has filed several RTIs on the basis of a court order to investigate the dismissal of funds meant for SC / ST students in the state. The scam is worth Rs 350 crore.
