New Delhi: The shutdown of the Char Dham road widening project will hamper the rapid movement of men, machines, tanks and heavy weapons across the hot Indo-China border and will have a serious impact on the country’s security, the Defense Ministry told the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
“These roads need to be improved and quality curves need to be improved to allow for quick movement to the border points and to prevent the armed forces from overtaking enemy forces. The Ministry of Highways, Justice RF Nariman, Naveen Sinha and KM Joseph have taken up a new affidavit filed by the Highway Ministry and asked the High Powered Committee to consider the matter. If the Ministry and the Army want this 7 meter wide roadway to be a two-way carriageway, then the HPC President will demand that the Char Dham Road Project be the only carriageway of 5.5 meters.
