Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed anti-govt bill on Wednesday amid bedlam. The bill would increase jail sentences and fines for various crimes and empower police officers to confiscate and inspect vehicles used for cattle or beef smuggling. The bill increases the maximum prison sentence from one year (as provided in its previous incarnation in 2010) to a maximum of seven years. For various offenses, the existing penalty of Rs 25,000 has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
