MUMBAI: The Department of Education will announce the second merit list for first-year junior college (FYJC) students on Saturday morning after a delay of nearly three months. More than 2.4 lakh seats are being offered to students in the Mumbai metropolitan area.

The second merit list, which was originally scheduled to be announced on September 10, was postponed after the Supreme Court interrupted the Maratha quota for admission this year. The delay is a loss of academic time for junior colleges.

Principals said the number of seats in the Open Category Pool has increased by 15,968 since the government decided to enforce a court order and proceed without a Maratha quota, but said the cut-offs cannot be seen. The principal of the junior college said, “We have so many days left and children may be interested in completing their admissions, which may also affect their choice of colleges.

Most of the popular junior colleges are minority institutions and the court order does not affect them. The Department of Education allowed students to change their college preferences before the second round of admission.
