Bangalore: Ravindra Jadeja has been justified as a concussion substitute in the first T20 match against Australia, with Anil Kumble saying on Saturday that there is no problem in replacing the all-rounder.
After Australia launched it following the demise of its young player Phil Hughes, Kumble was familiar with the rules as he was the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Committee which recommended the ICC board. The ICC board then approved the rule.
Left-arm all-rounder Jadeja sustained a concussion after hitting the left side of his forehead in the final over of India’s batting in Canberra on Friday. During the Australian innings, Chahal Jadeja replaced Aussie coach Justin Langer with an animated discussion with Australian match referee David Boone during the innings break. This is after the leg spinner Chahal came on as a replacement. Chahal picked up three wickets and India won the match.
“The rule has been in place for the last two years after the tragic death of Phil Hughes. When someone hits the head and concussion is a big thing, there is a pressure to come in. I know Jadeja is pulled. “Kunble said in the virtual launch of ‘The Hitman: The Rohit Sharma Story’. Written by Vijay Lokpalli and G Krishnan.
Kumble said he had read some reports indicating that Jadeja had not called for physics.
“I don’t think Jadeja’s call is to listen to physics. Umpires stop playing and call physio. That didn’t happen because Jadeja ran for a single and he continued playing. It doesn’t mean that he has to be on the concussion ground. At that point the doctors step in and stand up. Maybe that’s what’s the case, “explained the former India captain.
Former ace leg-spinner medical advice Jadeja was concussed, and then the team has the option to go to a player they like, which is what the visiting team did.
Kumble did not agree with reports suggesting that Jadeja should play all-rounder and India all-rounder.
“But Jadeja has done his part in batting. So, you see the other skills he brings. He’s a spinner. That’s why spinner (Chahal) was brought in as an equal substitute. “I am sure Chahal will not be a substitute. I have seen a batsman to replace Jadeja. I am sure Chahal can be listed at 15. I have no problem with a concussion replacement.”
